©OT2CYT - Claude Blot Set off to discover a forgotten treasure, in the heart of the BourgogneThe Tonnerrois vineyard has survived the centuries, marked by the trials of time, but has never completely disappeared. In recent years, this vineyard has been reborn, ready to reveal its heritage and its unique wines.
1. The Tonnerrois vineyard at a glance
2. Behind the scenes of a prestigious past
The Tonnerrois vineyard has its origins in the Roman conquest, but it was in the 4th and especially in the 11th century that it experienced a real boom. The monks of the abbeys of Quincy, near Choose, and Saint-Michel, to Tonnerre, were the first to perfect the techniques of vine cultivation and winemaking. But the Golden Age of Tonnerrois vineyard dates back to the beginning of the 14th century with Margaret of Bourgogne, Countess of Tonnerre and Queen of Naples and Sicily (yes, just that!), who left a deep mark on its history. By founding theHospital à Tonnerre, she offered vineyards to supply hospital staff with wine, a much safer drink than water at the time (this was before the invention of bottled water, it seems). And that's not all, the Knight of Eon, a mysterious spy in the service of Louis XV, also owned plots of vines in Tonnerre. During his missions across Europe, he carried bottles of this famous wine, which served to “break the ice” and facilitate conversation. Tonnerrois vineyard, rich in its history and its links with emblematic figures, bears witness to a unique wine heritage.
3. A renaissance in progress, driven by passion
After a brief historical reminder, let's return to the present. Today, the Tonnerrois vineyard covers 240 hectares, or 342 football pitches. This diverse terroir is home to 3 appellations, each with its own personality:
- Bourgogne Tonnerre : a fresh and light white wine with aromas of flowers, white fruits or citrus fruits. It will do justice to delicious Burgundian dishes.
- Bourgogne Epineuil : rarer and more secret, it has experienced a real renaissance after almost disappearing in the 1960s. Today, it is the hidden treasure of the region, with fruity red and rosé wines full of character.
- Crémant de Bourgogne : will add a little sparkle to your visit. With its fine, light bubbles, it brings a joyful and refreshing touch.
